HISTORY
It is believed that Lastovo was inhabitated since old Roman times. In time of Greek colonization it was called Ladesta. Island Lastovo was under English and French domination as well as under Italian. But it shared destiny of entire Croatian coast. So it was part of Croatia in Yugoslavia and today it is part of Independent Republic of Croatia.
Island Lastovo was first time mentioned in 6th century. First inhabitants were Ilirs. Many traces of infrastructure and village villas were found from the time of Roman domination. Center of island Lastovo was Ubli at that time. In time of Venetian domination town Lastovo was ruined and inhabitants built new town on internal side of the hill, for defense.
In time of Turk attacks, many pirates were attacking Lastovo, so inhabitants started to serve military to defense themselves.
After World War II island Lastovo was military island reserved for the army. Population of Lastovo is descending.
